"I'd rather be lucky than good"

"I'd rather be lucky than good"

When it comes to landscape photography, especially in places like the Hebrides, luck plays a huge part in having a successful day.

Weather moves quickly over the islands, and rain can be torrential, but short-lived, and sunlight can be beautiful, but also short-lived.

Experience has taught me how to roughly judge the likelihood of good 'light', on a given day at a given time. And weather forecasts, tide times and location maps are a great help. But nothing is ever certain.

When I visited Neist Point on this particular day, I was looking for something slightly different from the usual shots, mainly taken from the cliffs near to the car park. But the light was pretty flat, and I was probably there too early, so I decided to wander down towards the lighthouse, keeping an eye out for possible compositions, but knowing that, at worst, it's a stunning walk.

As time passed I was beginning to accept that it was going to be a fruitless day, but, the sun was getting low, and the Minch was starting to diffuse its glow, and then I realised that it might also pass behind the lens.....

With a bit of patience, several adjustments of position, and some near-misses, I managed to catch the sun as it illuminated the lighthouse.

And so......it's easy to get disheartened when the elements don't comply with your plans, but if you keep an open mind and eye, nature almost always gives you a chance.
